Overview

Emerline helped design and develop the Tribela mobile platform, taking the project from the initial idea stage to a working application. The platform is a social space built around safety for teenagers, integrating specialized AI services for text, image, video, and audio moderation into a unified content screening workflow.

Background

Tribela is a social platform company operating across the UK and Germany.

Its founder, Natalie Elizabeth Boll, built the concept around a concrete problem: children are frequently exposed to bullying and toxic interactions online, and existing platforms are structured in a way that reinforces this rather than prevents it.

This shaped both the product’s purpose and its audience. The platform targets teenagers aged 13 to 16 and their parents, who require clearer control over how communication and content are accessed and managed. Existing social platforms rely mainly on user-side controls such as filters, privacy settings, and blocki ng tools, which do not change how content is distributed or prioritized.

Tribela was designed to shift this logic by embedding moderation, access control, and interaction rules directly into the product architecture. The company approached Emerline to turn this concept into a working MVP and to define a technical foundation that could support operations across the UK, EU, US, Canada, and Australia.

Challenges

Moderation across multiple content types

Moderation was a core part of the platform from the beginning. The system needed to process text, images, audio, and video content and apply consistent safety rules across all formats. Each content type required a different processing approach, and aligning their outputs into a single, coherent moderation decision was the central technical challenge.

Dependency on external product components

The platform relied on third-party components for age verification, chat infrastructure, and content processing. Some of these components required adaptation before they could be integrated reliably into production flows. Where a service did not meet stability or functionality requirements at a given stage, it introduced risk to the delivery timeline.

Balancing scope, cost, and quality

The platform required a wide feature set: onboarding, communication, feed, moderation, and recommendation logic. Delivering this within defined budget and timeline boundaries required continuous prioritization. Not every technically ideal solution was viable, and the team had to identify where investment was justified and where a simpler approach was sufficient.

Multi-market compliance considerations

The product was designed for users across the UK, the US, the EU, Canada, and Australia. Each market carries specific regulatory requirements for platforms serving minors, covering age verification, parental consent, and data handling. Meeting these requirements without building separate regional versions of the platform was a significant design constraint from the outset.

Rebranding on the go

Before starting to work on the MVP, the Product Owner wanted to update the product’s branding. However, the timelines shifted so that when our team was already working on the MVP, the rebranding was not ready yet. A branding agency based in London was brought in to support this effort.

Ongoing rebranding during active development made it difficult to finalize mockups, proceed with implementation, and still commit to the initially planned deadline. The challenge was further compounded when, after six weeks, the agency failed to deliver any tangible results. Our in-house design team has to deliver a new branding in the shortest timeline.

Methodology and Approach

With the challenges clearly mapped, the team followed three core principles for decision-making:

  • Value over complexity
  • Each decision was evaluated based on the value it delivered relative to its implementation cost and complexity. The goal was not to maximize scope but to meet product requirements in a controlled and efficient way.

  • Pragmatic use of existing solutions
  • Third-party services were used when they reliably covered required functionality. Where external tools were insufficient, the team implemented focused custom components instead of building large standalone systems.

  • Controlled reduction of risk and overhead
  • Solutions that introduced unnecessary complexity or operational risk were simplified or deferred. This helped keep development aligned with immediate product priorities rather than theoretical completeness.

This approach shaped both the architecture and the delivery process and ensured consistent alignment with real product needs.

Solution

We built Tribela with safety and intentionality integrated directly into its mobile platform architecture. The Emerline team embedded smart moderation and control mechanisms natively into the app's logic, protecting users from onboarding to daily engagement.

The secure user experience is delivered across 5 key pillars:

Secure onboarding and access control

New users go through an age-verified registration process that includes parental consent flows where required by jurisdiction. Access rules are applied before any social interaction begins, reducing the risk of fake, duplicate, or underage accounts entering the platform uncontrolled.

Social connections and communication

The platform provides tools for controlled user communication and network building. Users can connect through requests and communicate via chat once connections are established. Blocking and reporting features are available to manage unwanted interactions.

Feed and user-generated content management

Users can create and view posts within a structured content feed. Content visibility is managed through privacy settings defined by the user. Moderation mechanisms are applied to detect and filter inappropriate content.

Profile management and recommendations

User profiles store personal data and interests that define platform personalization. This information is used to suggest relevant content and connections. Users retain control over what information is visible to others.

Interaction layer and engagement controls

User engagement is structured through predefined interaction options such as reactions and comments. Notifications inform users about activity related to their own content, including reactions, comments, and connection requests. Reporting tools are available across all interaction points.

New Tribela branding

Despite tight timelines and an ongoing MVP development phase, our in-house design team successfully delivered a fresh and cohesive brand identity for Tribela in record time.

The new branding introduced a modern visual language that better reflects Tribela’s innovative, user-centric approach, creating a stronger, more recognizable market presence. The refreshed identity provided a solid foundation for future product growth, marketing activities, and a more consistent customer experience across all touchpoints.

Technologies

The technology stack was selected to support early-stage delivery while keeping the system flexible for future scaling. It combines a native mobile application, a Python-based backend, and AWS cloud infrastructure.

Results

Tribela went from idea to beta testing in six months and reached public release in the App Store after nine months.

The team built the MVP from scratch, delivering five functional modules, from secure onboarding to multi-format AI moderation, within defined budget and timeline constraints.

The MVP launch gave the client a working product to validate with real users across the UK, EU, US, Canada, and Australia, and demonstrate product value to key stakeholders. The project remains ongoing, with Android and web versions, expanded functionality, and retention initiatives on the active roadmap.
